Dear Parents and Guardians,
This month we will be kicking off the school year with a school-wide program, Start with Hello week! This program enables students to make a difference with their peers in a simple, fun, and impactful way. We will be encouraging students to take small but powerful actions to promote connectedness and inclusion, and to identify and help others who are showing signs of social isolation. Stay tuned for a detailed schedule.
Start With Hello Week: September 23–27, 2019
On Friday, September 27th students will participate in Mix It Up Day! This event will take place during lunch for all students. Students will eat during their normal lunch time. Students will be mixed up by staff on the day of the event.
Mix It Up at lunch is a time to make new friends by sitting at a different lunch table in the cafeteria. Mix It Up is an activity to help us break out of our “comfort zones” and explore new ways of relating to and getting to know the people around us. Besides the excitement of this event, there is another important reason to participate in this special day.
The reason many kids get teased, bullied or picked on is because they are somehow seen as different—in the way they look, dress or talk, or even the family they come from, for example. Sometimes it may feel scary to get to know a classmate who is different from you. But once you take the first step, you’ll see that there’s a lot to learn from making friends with people who may be different from you in some way. By making a new friend, you may find out some cool things you would never be able to if you always stuck with people who are just like you. Including others and making new friends can be scary, but taking that big leap to talk to a new person may help them feel included, accepted, welcome and safe at school. And that is always worth a little bit of extra effort!

Don’t forget tomorrow starts the first Cookies with the Counselor! This event is a monthly reward for our falcons in grades kindergarten through fourth! Each classroom teacher will choose one student from their class that has been caught doing the right thing. They will be allowed to bring a friend. The students will bring their lunches with them whether they are packing or buying that day. I will provide the cookies.
