Weekly Greeting

Updated on 08-27-2017 at 6:27am.

Hello and Happy Sunday!

What a great first week of school we had!  I am really enjoying getting to know each one of the children.  I hope they told you about all of the fun we had last week reading stories about the Gingerbread Man and the Gingerbread Girl, going on a gingerbread hunt and decorating gingerbread cookies.  I am sure that they were all exhausted when they got home to you.  It usually takes a couple of weeks for them to gtet into the routine and get used to such a long day.

This week, our theme is "Back to School" so we will be reading many stories about the first day of school, following school rules, being happy with who we are and always trying our best such as The Kissing Hand, Froggy Goes to School. I Like Myself, The Little Engine that Could and Officer Buckle and Gloria.

We will also be spending a great deal of time in religion class this week talking about our school theme, "Do Small Things With Great Love" and coming up with ways that we can accomplish this goal.

In math, we will begin to learn about the numbers 0-5.  A big part of the kindergarten math standards focuses on numbers.  Not just recognizing and writing them, but being able to recognize them in many different ways and how to pick them apart and put them back together (compose sne decompose).

As we are working on each of these things, I will also be spending a great deal of time assessing each of the students to see where they are beginning the year in regards to reading and math.  Much of the first two weeks weeks will be spent doing these assessments.  Once the assessments are complete I will have a better idea of each of the child's individual needs and how to best meet those needs in the classroom.  I will send copies of all of the assessments home once they are completed and then we will begin centers and small group guided reading.

If you continue reading, I have posted the specifics from this week's class newletter so that you can see all of the details of what will be happening this week in kindergarten.

Please note that there was a change to our gym time again.  We now have gym on Monday so the children may wear their gym clothes to school tomorrow!  This is how it will remain for the rest of the year!

Also, this coming Thursday will be our first Pride Day!  On Pride day, the students may wear any St. Francis top with their regular uniform bottoms.

I hope you have a great week!  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me!

Literacy Skills

Updated on 02-24-2017 at 11:50am.

The month of March is here!  This week we are celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss.  His talents go way beyond rhyming words.  We will celebrating his life with some of our favorite books by Dr. Seuss.  Our week of celebration will include a Readers Theatre, a scavenger hunt and games all focused around Dr. Seuss.

Our Friendly Falcons reading clubs will meet this week to choose our next books.  The 3rd grade girls have made the wonderful choice of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.  The books are ordered and should be here soon.  Can’t wait to start.  Fourth grade girls should be finishing up the Because of Winn Dixie movie and ready to choose a new book.  Fifth grade is watching The Wizard of Oz.  If anyone is interested in joining a book club please come to the library and help pick a book.
